Indie Seguros is an embedded insurance platform for digital platforms and marketplaces, covering gig-economy workers and independent service providers in Portugal and Spain. The company started in 2021 as a digital insurance broker for freelancers and small businesses in Portugal, sourcing workers' compensation, multi-risk, professional liability, life, and health policies from multiple carriers, then built an API layer on top of that brokerage foundation to embed coverage directly into partner products.
The core offering, Insurance OS, is an API-first platform that lets platform businesses activate real-time, per-transaction coverage -- including professional liability and accident insurance -- for every task, shift, or transaction a service provider completes. Coverage is scoped to the moment it is needed rather than sold as a standalone policy, and partners pay only for the insurance used.
Indie expanded from Portugal into Spain in November 2025 through a partnership with insurer Hiscox, starting with the domestic-services platform Oscar, an existing Portuguese customer already operating in 20 Spanish cities. The company has been funded through a non-equity assistance grant from the Startup Lisboa Rocket Program (closed January 2023) rather than equity investment, and its CEO has stated plans to significantly grow the team and revenue over the following 18 months alongside further European expansion.
