Overview
Newe is a direct-to-farmer agricultural insurance carrier licensed in Brazil, offering parametric and conventional coverage for crops, livestock, machinery, and liability risks targeting small-scale and family farming operations. The company was established in 2017 as a fronting operation for an American reinsurer; in 2019 the management team completed a full buyout after the reinsurer exited the Brazilian market. Newe is recognized as a parametric insurance pioneer in the country, having issued Brazil's first federally subsidized parametric policy in 2021 and the first parametric product for cocoa producers.
Newe underwrites risk through its proprietary "Green Data" platform, which integrates real-time weather monitoring and satellite data to generate precision risk assessments and trigger automatic claim payments. The platform eliminates manual field inspections by replacing them with digitized payout triggers tied to pre-defined rainfall, temperature, and weather index thresholds. Distribution runs through embedded agricultural channels -- cooperatives, input suppliers, agribusiness companies, and specialized brokers -- embedding insurance into existing value chains rather than selling through standalone retail. The company educates approximately 12,000 farmers annually and issues around 3,000 policies per year, with more than half covering farms smaller than 50 hectares.
In January 2023, Newe received BRL 27 million (approximately USD 5.29 million) from the InsuResilience Investment Fund, managed by BlueOrchard on behalf of Germany's development bank KfW. Since that investment, the company has issued more than 6,500 policies across multiple crop types and has set a target of reaching 1.9 million beneficiaries by 2027.
