Overview

Cover, operating as Cover Technologies, LLC dba Cover.com, is a personal and commercial insurance comparison brokerage serving consumers and small businesses across the United States. The San Francisco company was founded in 2016 by Karn Saroya, Anand Dhillon, and Natalie Gray as part of Y Combinator's Winter 2016 batch, originally launching a mobile app that let users insure everyday items by photographing them. That app-based product has since been retired in favor of a web-based comparison marketplace.

The current platform asks consumers a short set of questions about their coverage needs, then returns real-time quotes from a network of licensed carrier and agency partners while screening for applicable discounts. Cover is licensed to place auto, home, and commercial insurance in all 50 US states, and does not itself act as the insurer of record -- the carrier named on the resulting policy documents underwrites the coverage.

Cover raised a USD 16 million Series B in October 2018 led by Tribe Capital, with participation from Y Combinator, Social Capital, Exor, and Samsung Ventures, bringing total disclosed funding to roughly USD 27 million. No funding rounds have been reported since 2018, and the company's original YC batch listing is now marked inactive, consistent with its shift from the app-based product to the current marketplace model.
