Overview
AIUC (Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company) is a San Francisco-based specialty solutions provider that offers certification, auditing, and liability insurance for AI agents, serving AI software vendors and the enterprises that deploy them. The company operates at the intersection of AI risk standards and insurance, providing a three-part confidence infrastructure that enables enterprises to adopt autonomous AI agents with contractual assurance.
The platform centers on the AIUC-1 standard -- a certification framework modeled after SOC 2 that draws on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the EU AI Act, and MITRE ATLAS across six domains: Data & Privacy, Safety, Security, Reliability, Accountability, and Society. Achieving AIUC-1 certification requires implementing 50-plus technical, operational, and legal safeguards and passing independent third-party adversarial testing. Vendors with stronger audit scores receive better insurance terms, creating a direct link between security posture and coverage pricing.
AIUC launched from stealth in July 2025 having raised USD 15M in a seed round led by Nat Friedman (NFDG), with participation from Emergence, Terrain, and Anthropic co-founder Ben Mann. At launch, the company reported early customers including ElevenLabs (first AI agent insurance policyholder), Intercom (Fin AI agent certified), Ada, and Alpharun. Schellman serves as the first AIUC-1 accredited auditor.
