Overview

Ki is a follow-capacity carrier operating as Lloyd's Syndicate 1618, using a proprietary machine learning algorithm to deliver instant digital underwriting decisions on specialty insurance risks. The company distributes exclusively through brokers placing business via the Lloyd's market and requires no direct human underwriter review of individual risks -- the algorithm reads live slip data from the Placing Platform Limited (PPL) digital marketplace and responds in seconds.

The platform handles commercial specialty lines including property, marine, energy, aviation, and liability risks. Capacity decisions are made autonomously based on the algorithm's analysis of risk characteristics and historical performance data, developed in partnership with University College London. Ki also manages partner syndicates, aggregating follow capacity from Aspen Digital, Beazley, Travelers, QBE, and Tokio Marine Kiln under a single digital interface.

Ki was founded in 2021 as a joint venture between Brit Insurance and Google Cloud, initially operating within Brit's structure before becoming a standalone company in January 2025. In its first year of operations it wrote over USD 400M in gross written premium -- described as the fastest start in Lloyd's history. By 2022, annual GWP exceeded USD 800M, and by year-end 2025 Ki managed USD 1.11B in total premium, including over USD 200M in partner capacity. The company is backed by Blackstone Tactical Opportunities and Fairfax Financial Holdings.
