Overview

Medbook Africa is a clinical operating system provider serving health facilities, insurers, and pharmacies across sub-Saharan Africa. The platform connects clinicians, pharmacies, insurers, and patients through a unified system that manages the full patient journey from appointment to insurance settlement. Founded in Kenya through a joint venture with Strathmore University and i-Lab Africa, the company operates primarily in Kenya and Uganda with 74 active facilities and more than 9.8 million patient records.

The platform is delivered as a modular yet integrated system comprising six functional modules -- hospital management, pharmacy management, claims processing, underwriting, laboratory information, and patient mobile access -- tied together by a shared identity and event layer. The architecture also includes a closed-loop clinical decision support system developed under a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant, a portable patient identity layer, and a public prescription verification endpoint to address counterfeit pharmaceuticals in emerging markets.

Backed by ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) as its principal shareholder with a 30% equity stake, alongside DEG (German development finance institution), Medbook processes over 300,000 insurance claims per month at peak. In 2025, Bloomberg recognized the company as one of its Top 25 African Startups to Watch.
