Wysh
Making life insurance accessible through embedded and direct-to-consumer digital coverage
Overview
Wysh Life and Health Insurance Company is a direct-to-consumer and embedded life insurance carrier headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and licensed across the United States (excluding California). Operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual since 2021, Wysh focuses on term life coverage for individual consumers as well as micro-life insurance distributed through banks, credit unions, and fintechs as a deposit account benefit.
The company operates two parallel platforms: a direct-to-consumer digital term life product branded Wyshbox, and a B2B embedded insurance platform called Life Benefit. The Wyshbox product enables applicants aged 18-50 to purchase customized term policies online without a medical exam -- completing the process in under ten minutes via a digital health questionnaire. The Life Benefit platform enables financial institutions to automatically extend up to USD 20,000 in death benefit coverage to deposit account holders with no opt-in, no underwriting, and no additional fees for the end consumer. A third product extension, announced in November 2025, brings Life Benefit to custodial stablecoin accounts.
Wysh holds an AM Best financial strength rating of A- (Excellent) and has issued over USD 1 billion in life coverage within a single year, protecting more than 15,000 lives over the past two years. The company was co-founded by Alexander Matjanec, who previously co-founded NAFLI (National Alliance for Financial Literacy and Inclusion), a non-profit partnering with Minority Deposit Institutions to expand embedded insurance access to underserved communities.
