Trupanion

Trupanion is a subscription-based pet medical insurance carrier for cats and dogs, distributed primarily through veterinary hospitals across the United States and Canada, with additional policies sold directly to consumers. The company entered Continental Europe in 2022 through the acquisition of two regional pet insurers and has offered a directly branded product in Germany and Switzerland since September 2024.

The company differentiates on VetDirect Pay, a patented point-of-checkout payment system that settles eligible veterinary invoices directly with participating hospitals, in many cases within minutes, so pet owners cover only their portion of the bill at checkout rather than paying in full and filing for reimbursement. VetDirect Pay integrates with veterinary practice-management platforms including ezyVet, Covetrus, and, as of August 2026, Digitail. A network of more than 120 independent Territory Partners provides in-person support and education to veterinary hospitals across North America, and a Vet Portal lets clinics submit claims and request pre-approvals without leaving their own systems. Policies are underwritten in the United States by American Pet Insurance Company and in Canada by Omega General Insurance Company, both Trupanion-affiliated underwriters; in Germany and Switzerland, local third-party insurers underwrite the policies while Trupanion's European team administers them.

Trupanion has traded on Nasdaq as TRUP since its July 2014 initial public offering, which raised USD 71 million. For the second quarter of 2026 the company reported revenue of USD 392.9 million, up 11% year over year, and raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of USD 1.58-1.60 billion; it also authorized a USD 100 million share repurchase program. As of that quarter, Trupanion covered more than 1,124,000 enrolled pets with a monthly retention rate of 98.37%. Third-party workforce data from Revelio Labs put headcount at roughly 1,112 employees worldwide as of March 2026, about 82% of them in the United States.
