Overview

Surex is a digital insurance brokerage serving personal-lines and small-business insurance buyers across Canada. Customers compare and buy quotes from a panel of national carriers in a single online session, covering auto, home, condo, tenant, and specialty lines.

The company was founded in 2005 in Magrath, Alberta, as a conventional storefront brokerage before moving to a digital-first model around 2011. It has since added offices in Burlington and Cambridge, Ontario, and operates in every Canadian province and territory except Quebec. Surex quotes auto, home, condo, tenant, and bundled personal-lines policies alongside specialty products such as motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, RV, boat, travel, farm, landlord, and business insurance, drawing on a panel of more than a dozen partner carriers including Aviva, Intact, Wawanesa, CAA Insurance, Economical Insurance, and SGI Canada.

Customers complete an online quote in roughly ten minutes and receive instant proof of insurance, with a dedicated advisor assigned for follow-up questions and claims support. In 2021 Surex partnered with Filogix, a Finastra-owned mortgage-origination platform, to embed one-click home-insurance quoting directly into the workflow used by mortgage brokers across Canada. That same year, iA Financial Corporation acquired a 70% majority stake in Surex; co-founders Lance Miller and Matt Alston remain minority owners and continue to run the business, with Surex operating under its own brand within the iA Financial Group. In 2025 the company adopted Applied Systems' Digital Brokerage platform to automate new-business and remarketing workflows alongside its internal tooling.
