Motion Insurance is a direct-to-consumer personal auto insurance carrier headquartered in Saratoga Springs, Utah, licensed in Arizona, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin. The company was founded in 2017 and built its insurance stack from the ground up with a focus on telematics and usage-based insurance (UBI), pricing policies based on individual driving behavior rather than traditional proxy factors such as zip code or credit score.

The carrier collects telematics data through two channels: a Bluetooth Beacon device that connects to a vehicle cigarette outlet, and a smartphone-based mobile app that uses onboard sensors to measure speed, location, and driving patterns. This data generates a driver score that, combined with traditional rating factors, determines policy premiums. Customers who demonstrate safe driving can reduce premiums by up to 50% compared to traditional policies. The mobile app also allows customers to obtain coverage in approximately two minutes, access digital insurance cards, file claims, and track their driver score. Motion was licensed with the Utah Insurance Department as of October 2018.

Motion has a B+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. In 2020, Telenav -- a connected car and location-based services company that held a minority stake in Motion Auto since November 2019 -- increased its investment in the carrier. Telenav subsequently launched Novo Insurance as a sub-agent for Motion Auto, with coverage underwritten by 21st Century Premier Insurance Company, a Farmers subsidiary. The company participated in the InsurTech NY accelerator program in 2020 and was named one of MountainWest Capital Network's Emerging Elite companies in Utah at the 26th annual awards ceremony in October 2020.
