Lifenet Insurance
Direct-to-consumer online life insurance carrier based in Tokyo, Japan
Overview
Lifenet Insurance is a direct-to-consumer online life insurance carrier licensed in Japan, selling term life, medical, cancer, women's, disability, and dementia coverage almost entirely through its own website. Founded in 2006 and rebranded under the Lifenet name in 2008, it was Japan's first internet-native life insurer and underwrites its own products rather than acting as a broker or comparison site.
The company's distribution model bypasses Japan's traditional face-to-face "sales lady" agent channel, targeting first-time insurance buyers in their 20s-40s with online enrollment, a policy-management mobile app for iOS and Android, LINE-based and phone/chat customer support, and same-day smartphone claims for eligible cases. Lifenet publishes its cost structure and compares its pricing openly against peers, positioning lower distribution overhead as the basis for reduced premiums.
Lifenet has traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (ticker 7157) since its 2012 IPO on the Mothers market and moved to the Prime Market in July 2025. It reported approximately 1.23 million policies in force as of fiscal year-end March 2023. For the fiscal year ending March 2026, the company forecasts annualized premium of policies-in-force of roughly JPY 41.3 billion and net income of approximately JPY 8.2 billion; its most recently reported quarter (Q4 FY2026, May 2026) showed net income up 34.2% year-over-year.
