Overview
Laka is a bicycle and micro-mobility insurance MGA selling direct to consumers across the United Kingdom and nine European Union markets. Founded in 2017 by Tobias Taupitz, Jens Hartwig, and Ben Allen, the company distributes coverage for bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and other green mobility vehicles through a digital platform at app.laka.co, supplemented by embedded distribution via retail cycling shops.
The company operates on a collective-based pricing model in which monthly claim costs are distributed across all active policyholders rather than charged as fixed upfront premiums. Laka underwrites P&C personal lines specialty coverage including theft, accidental damage, third-party liability, and health and recovery insurance for cyclists. The platform applies zero excess on bike claims and no depreciation policies. Capacity is provided by regulated carrier partners under FCA authorization (No. 785971).
As of mid-2026, Laka has grown its footprint through four acquisitions -- Cylantro (French e-bike broker, 2023), CoverCloud UK renewal rights (2024), Luko e-scooter portfolio (2025), and VeloLife bike insurance business (May 2026). The VeloLife acquisition added an embedded retail channel via Citrus Lime EPOS integration, allowing coverage to be sold directly at point of sale in cycling shops. The company has raised USD 51.38M across 14 rounds including a USD 10.4M Series B in July 2025 and a GBP 6.5M venture debt facility from HSBC Innovation Banking in November 2025.
