Overview

Government Personnel Mutual Life Insurance Company (GPM Life) was founded in 1934 in San Antonio, Texas, by retired Army Colonel Peter J. Hennessey. Hennessey established GPM Life after discovering that life insurance policies of the era did not pay benefits if the insured was killed by an act of war, and that major insurers were unwilling to eliminate this exclusion for military personnel. GPM Life became the first insurer to offer life insurance without a war exclusion, pioneering coverage for active duty and retired military service members, federal civil service employees, and their families. The company is organized as a policyholder-owned mutual company in which policyholders elect the Board of Directors and share in profits through policy dividends. GPM Life's subsidiary GPM Health and Life Insurance Company also offers Medicare Supplement insurance.
