Overview
GCU (Greek Catholic Union of the USA) is a mutual, member-owned fraternal benefit carrier offering life insurance and annuity products to individuals and families across the United States. Founded in 1892 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania by the union of 14 independent Greek Catholic lodges, the organization relocated its headquarters to Beaver, Pennsylvania in 1987 and now holds total assets exceeding USD 1.5 billion.
GCU administers its insurance operations through a cloud-based policy administration platform built on Oracle Insurance Policy Administration (OIPA) and delivered as SaaS by Equisoft. The modernized stack enables electronic applications, self-service member and agent portals, and improved operational efficiency across the full policy lifecycle. The organization distributes products through a network of licensed independent agents.
GCU maintains an A- financial strength rating from both AM Best and Kroll Bond Rating Agency. As a not-for-profit fraternal benefit society, the organization is funded through member dues and insurance operations rather than external equity investors. The organization had approximately 84 employees as of 2023 and is supported by around 850 active volunteers.
