Gamma Iota Sigma
Connecting collegiate talent to insurance, risk management, and actuarial science careers
Overview
Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) is an international collegiate professional fraternity and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on insurance, risk management, and actuarial science education. Founded in 1965 by Warren L. Weeks with support from the Griffith Insurance Foundation, GIS chartered its first chapter at The Ohio State University on April 16, 1966. It operates as the primary collegiate talent pipeline connecting students pursuing insurance-related careers with industry employers across North America.
The organization runs programs including an annual conference, regional conference series, a career center, scholarships, and the Sustaining Partners corporate membership program. Through these initiatives, GIS facilitates recruitment, professional development, and scholarship funding for students entering insurance, risk management, and actuarial science fields. The 55th Annual Conference is scheduled for October 2026 in Charlotte, NC, featuring a career fair with 100+ exhibiting employer organizations.
GIS supports 177 university chapters (123 currently active) across the United States, with more than 7,000 enrolled student members and approximately 35,000 alumni. Corporate engagement is structured through 62 Sustaining Partner companies, which include insurance carriers, brokers, and risk management firms that participate in recruiting, sponsorship, and mentoring activities.
