Founded in 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio, by Laura Bennett and Alex Krooglik, the company underwrites accident and illness policies for dogs and cats through American Modern Insurance Group subsidiaries (American Modern Home Insurance Company and American Southern Home Insurance Company). The company operates under the licensed entity Embrace Pet Insurance Agency, LLC (License #0G89328).

The company processes claims digitally, with 90% of claims paid within 10 days. In 2024, Embrace processed 1.2 million claims and paid USD 212.5 million in veterinary reimbursements with a 92% coverage rate. In January 2025, the company announced it had surpassed USD 1 billion in cumulative veterinary claim reimbursements since inception. As of 2025, the company insures more than 500,000 pets.

In November 2023, JAB Holding Company acquired Embrace for USD 1.5 billion. JAB is a global private investment firm with holdings in pet care and veterinary services, including PetPartners, Felix, Toto, Assur O'Poil, and FIGO. The company continues to operate independently under the Embrace brand from its Cleveland headquarters.
