DESJARDINS GENERAL INSURANCE
Canada's cooperative P&C carrier offering auto, home, and commercial insurance backed by digital innovation
Overview
Desjardins General Insurance Group (DGIG) is the property and casualty insurance subsidiary of Desjardins Group, Canada's largest cooperative financial institution. The company operates as a multi-brand, multi-channel carrier writing personal auto, home, and commercial lines across Canada. As of 2026, DGIG ranks as the second-largest P&C insurer nationally and the largest in Ontario, a position cemented by its 2015 acquisition of State Farm Canada's operations. The group distributes through the Desjardins caisse branch network, direct online channels, and approximately 500 licensed agents, serving more than two million policyholders.
On the technology side, DGIG has deployed EIS Suite for policy administration and billing across both personal and commercial lines, with commercial systems hosted on Microsoft Azure. The company operates Ajusto, a smartphone-based usage-based insurance (UBI) program for auto that scores driving behavior and offers premium discounts up to 25%. For home insurance, DGIG partnered with Roost Home to enable the Alert program, which uses IoT sensors to detect water leaks, smoke, and other hazards. Policy and claims management are available via iOS and Android mobile apps.
DGIG is wholly owned by Desjardins Group, a cooperative founded in 1900 with over CAD 510B in total assets and a record surplus of CAD 3.81B reported for fiscal 2025. As a subsidiary, DGIG does not carry its own AM Best rating separately from the broader Desjardins Group financial profile.
