CAA MyPace
Canada's first pay-as-you-go auto insurance -- pay only for the kilometres you drive.
Overview
CAA MyPace is a pay-as-you-go auto insurance program offered by CAA Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the CAA Club Group -- one of Canada's largest automobile associations (established 1913). Launched in Ontario in July 2018, CAA MyPace was the first pay-per-kilometre auto insurance program in Canada, designed for low-mileage drivers who cover fewer than 9,000 to 12,000 kilometres per year.
The program operates on a two-part pricing model: a base rate covering the vehicle while not in use, plus incremental charges billed in 1,000-kilometre blocks purchased in advance. An OBD-II plug-in telematics device tracks kilometres driven and transmits data via cellular signal to CAA servers. Notably, the device records only usage metrics -- not driving behaviour such as speed or braking -- providing transparency for privacy-conscious customers.
Since its Ontario launch, CAA MyPace has expanded to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The program has driven a 30% increase in CAA auto policy sales overall, with 71% of MyPace sales going to brand-new CAA customers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program experienced close to 250% year-over-year growth as more Canadians shifted to remote work and reduced driving.
