Black Insurance
Blockchain-based insurance risk ecosystem enabling syndicated underwriting and digital policy management
Overview
Black Insurance is a blockchain-based digital insurance carrier and platform operating from Tallinn, Estonia. The company builds and operates an Insurance Risk Ecosystem delivered as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), enabling insurers, MGAs, brokers, and policyholders to create, manage, and underwrite insurance products in real time. Modeled after the Lloyd's market syndicate structure, Black Insurance allows participants to co-invest in insurance pools and gives retail investors fractional ownership in insurance syndicates, opening historically centralized insurance markets to crowdfunded participation.
The platform is built on a proprietary blockchain implementation that powers smart contracts, policy administration, and syndicate tokenization. Core capabilities include machine learning-driven underwriting and fraud detection, microservice-based cloud architecture, and open APIs for integration with incumbent insurance infrastructure. The technology stack supports end-to-end workflows from quote and bind through claims, reinsurance management, and financing.
The founding team has deep insurtech roots, having previously built insly.com, a global insurance broker software platform, and Iizi.ee, one of the earliest online insurance brokers in Europe. Institutional backing includes Rakuten, Draper Esprit, Thomvest Ventures, Talis Capital, Emery Capital, Rubicon VC, and Fineqia International.
