Arbella Insurance Group
A leading New England regional carrier delivering personal and commercial insurance through the independent agent channel since 1988.
Overview
Arbella Insurance Group is a regional property and casualty insurance carrier headquartered in Quincy, Massachusetts. Founded in 1988 by John F. Donohue and Francis X. Bellotti after Kemper Insurance withdrew from the Massachusetts auto market, Arbella was established to fill the resulting coverage gap for New England policyholders. Today the company writes more than USD 1 billion in annual written premium and holds over USD 2 billion in assets, making it one of the largest regional P&C carriers in New England.
Arbella serves individuals, families, and businesses exclusively through the independent agent channel, partnering with more than 5,000 independent insurance agents across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. Personal lines products are available in Massachusetts and Connecticut, while commercial lines extend to all four New England states. The company operates five claim offices across the region to support policyholders close to home.
AM Best affirmed Arbella's Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) and in January 2025 revised the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating outlook from stable to positive, citing significantly improved underwriting results and operating performance in 2024 driven by pricing, underwriting, and claims initiatives. Arbella operates through a group of subsidiaries including Arbella Mutual Insurance Company, Arbella Protection Insurance Company, Arbella Indemnity Insurance Company, Covenant Insurance Company, and Commonwealth Mutual Insurance Company.
