Aetna, a CVS Health Company
Building a world where health is simple, affordable, and within reach for everyone.
Overview
Aetna, a CVS Health Company, is one of the largest managed health care companies in the United States, with roots dating to 1853 in Hartford, Connecticut. Acquired by CVS Health in November 2018 for approximately USD 69 billion, Aetna operates as the health benefits segment of CVS Health Corporation. The company provides medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioral health, long-term care, and disability insurance products primarily through employer-sponsored plans and government programs including Medicare Advantage and Medicaid managed care.
As of mid-2025, Aetna serves approximately 26.7 million medical members and maintains a provider network of more than 1.5 million care professionals. Following significant financial pressures in 2024 from elevated medical costs -- particularly in Medicare Advantage -- Aetna has been executing a strategic restructuring under new president Steve Nelson. The company exited the individual ACA marketplace effective January 1, 2026, redirecting resources toward Medicare Advantage, commercial employer, and other segments where it holds stronger competitive positions.
Aetna is advancing a broad digital transformation as part of CVS Health's USD 20 billion multi-year technology investment. The company launched generative AI-powered conversational navigation in the Aetna Health app and introduced the Aetna Care Paths platform for personalized member guidance. Over 81% of Aetna's Medicare Advantage members are enrolled in plans rated 4 stars or higher for 2026.
