Originally incorporated in 1993 as Consolidated Health Plans (CHP), the company underwent significant growth and was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 2011. A rebranding to Wellfleet in 2019 accompanied the expansion into voluntary employee benefits under a new Workplace division. Wellfleet's core student health business covers colleges and universities nationwide, making it one of the largest administrators of student health insurance plans in the country.

In 2021, Wellfleet launched the Lighthouse platform, a cloud-native insurance administration system developed in partnership with EIS Group. Built in under 12 months, Lighthouse handles the full policy lifecycle -- rating, quoting, enrollment, billing, claims, and customer service -- across the Workplace division and serves third-party insurers as a digital TPA solution. The Lighthouse platform validates enrollment data in hours rather than weeks, a material operational improvement over prior processes. The two licensed carriers carry A++ (Superior) financial strength ratings and Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings of "aa+" from A.M. Best, reflecting the strength of the MedPro Group parent.
