## Overview

The American Academy of Actuaries (the Academy) is the United States primary professional association representing all actuaries in all practice areas. Established on October 25, 1965, the Academy serves as the voice of the U.S. actuarial profession to policymakers, regulators, and the public. With more than 20,000 members holding the Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) designation, the Academy is headquartered at 1850 M Street NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20036.

The Academy mission is to serve the public and the actuarial profession by advancing professionalism, informing public policy, enhancing member value, and communicating effectively. It provides objective, nonpartisan actuarial analysis and testimony to federal and state policymakers and sets the qualifications, practice, and professionalism standards for actuaries practicing in the United States. The MAAA designation is required for actuaries who sign statements of actuarial opinion in the U.S., making Academy membership a professional necessity for practicing U.S. actuaries.

In 2025-26, Academy President Tricia Matson, MAAA, FSA, leads the organization with a focus on serving members, strengthening the actuarial profession, and demonstrating actuarial value across health, casualty, life, retirement, and risk management disciplines. Frank Todisco serves as President-Elect. A board-level governance review ensures the organization remains forward-looking in addressing AI advances, emerging regulatory challenges, and evolving member competency requirements.
